La morale est souvent comprise comme un frein « naturel » au mal. Pourtant, dans la réalité sociale, la situation bien souvent est exactement l’inverse. L’inverse aussi de ce qu’imaginent les experts en psychiatrie ou en psychologie. La morale peut notamment favoriser le mal. En rapport avec l’autorité et le déplacement de la responsabilité la morale peut aisément être instrumentalisée.
Les 23 variations du test de base de Stanely Milgram devaient tenter d’isoler les facteurs qui transforment le plus efficacement la morale en obéissance. Nous en examinons six de manière plus approfondie.
