Au début des années 1960, le psy­cho­logue amé­ri­cain Stan­ley Mil­gram a mené une série d’ex­pé­riences à l’u­ni­ver­si­té de Yale. Dans le contexte du pro­cès Eich­mann à Jéru­sa­lem et celui des études sur la per­son­na­li­té auto­ri­taire des années 1940, Mil­gram vou­lait décou­vrir le lien entre l’au­to­ri­té et l’obéissance.

Comme figure d’au­to­ri­té, Mil­gram fai­sait inter­ve­nir un scien­ti­fique qui ordonne à des per­sonnes de punir d’autres per­sonnes par des élec­tro­chocs, soi-disant pour une expé­rience d’apprentissage.

« Fol­low the scien­tist ! », en somme. 

Les résul­tats de ces expé­riences res­tent aus­si éton­nants qu’effrayants.
